Welcome to Spiaggia Pelosa

We are on the famous Hairy Beach (Spiaggia Pelosa) on the NW tip of Sardegna. This beach ranks in the top 10 of Europe and believe me, the secret is out. I haven't seen beach crowds like this since I was a toddler on the beaches of
Ocean City, New Jersey.  But I get it. It is stunning and I have never felt sand as fine as this. Come on in. I'll show you around.

Above and below are pictures of our set up. It cost 22 Euros (about 28 bucks) to rent this umbrella and two chairs for the day. We are 4 rows back from the shoreline. We arrived at 10 this morning - way to late to fetch a front row seat.

Below is Sardegna's flag - basically seen everywhere. It is called the "Quattro Mori" - the four Moors.  They are blindfolded and face the West, towards Spain.  The flag has been revised in just the past two decades and now shows the 4 Moors facing East towards Italy - un blindfolded and free. Sardegna was colonized by Spain for several centuries. In fact, Catalan is still spoken on the NW coast.

There were a lot of topless bathers on the coast of Spain - mainly from the Germans and Scandinavians visiting there. Plus some daring Spaniards. The majority of the beach goers here are Italian and therefore wearing their tops.  Despite the myth, Italians are quite modest.

See the man below in the blue shirt?  He has a pretty good gig going selling wrap bracelets from his kayak. There are lots of vendors here but his product is the most unique.  I spoke with him. He is from Serbia and hates the US government with a passion.

The watch tower off in the distance was from the Spanish era. These can be seen all over.

Off in the distance is Asinara Island which was inhabited by tuna fishermen until the 1800's when a penal colony was developed there. Now you can only visit restricted areas as it is home to the rare albino donkey.

The water is this clear.

Tomorrow we are off to Central Sardegna - near Nuoro where we will stay on a farm.  It is so good to be back in Italy but the real home coming will be on a week or so when we arrive in Perugia where I used up live!  Stay tuned.

Ciao e baci
Nancy.

Ps. Since our camera and tablet were stolen I will be posting from the  I phone. Basically one finger typing and formatting is tricky ....
